Suspect for Second Father’s Day Death Appears in Court

A 39 year old originally charged with ‘causing injury’ in the District Court has been transferred to the the Supreme Court to face a murder charge.

It is alleged that Talaitau Niue of Satitoa, Aleipata caused the death of a man from the same village when a fight broke out after a drinking session during the recent Father’s Day long weekend.

Niue was represented in Court by former Prosecutor of the Attorney General’s Office, Ann Matalasi, before Senior Judge of the District Court, Talasa Sa’aga Atoa.

The Court heard that the charge was upgraded when the victim died two days later at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital (TTMH) from injuries allegedly caused by the assault.
Judge Atoa referred the case to the upper Court where Niue is scheduled to appear on the 30th of August for mention.

 

This is the second death involving alcohol during the Father’s Day long weekend this year.  A 20 year old youth also appeared in Court this week facing a murder charge for the death of a 43 year old father of seven who passed away after five days at the TTMH Intensive Care Unit.
