The busy four-lane road at Vaitele-Tai

19 July 2021 Apia Samoa. A 23 year old from Toamua has died from critical injuries sustained when he was hit by a van while crossing the busy four-lane road at the Vaitele Business District on Saturday evening.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Auapaau Logoitino Filipo confirmed to Samoa Global News that the incident occurred infront of Bluebird Lumber Hardware store at Vaitele Tai while the young man was trying to cross to the other side of the road at around 7pm.

Auapaau said preliminary investigations suggest the Serena Van was speeding and the driver did not stop at the accident site.

According to the Deputy Police Commissioner, the woman said she did not stop because she was afraid, but instead turned herself in on Sunday morning.

The 23 year old remained unconscious at the Intensive Care Unit of Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital, but passed away this morning as a result of his injuries.

Auapaau says the woman was initially charged with negligent driving causing injury, but has now been charged with negligent driving causing death.

The Samoa Police again advise the public especially drivers to please be on the alert at all times to ensure the safety of pedestrians, and also passengers in other vehicles.

The woma is scheduled to appear in Court later this month.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving family at this time.
