The official opening of the Art Whistler Memorial Garden was hosted by the Samoa Conversation Society and the MNRE (Division of Environment of Conservation) on 26th of August at the Vailima Botanical Garden.
Wayne Arthur Whistler (October 12, 1944 – April 2, 2020) was an American ethnobotanist, academic, writer and professor at the University of Hawaii’s Department of Botany.

He was an expert on tropical flora of the Pacific Islands especially Samoa.
Sadly he passed away due to the Covid 19.

Honourable Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa opened the Garden and said “We thank Art Whistler for his service to Samoa an the region and for leaving behind such a rich legacy of knowledge on Samoa’s plants and their uses;
“We hope that the garden will be a place of meditation as well a quiet reflection and that the garden will enhance the educational and recreational value.”
Friends and colleagues who knew Dr. Art Whistler were present at the function.
