Proverbs 25:20 “Like one who takes away a garment on a cold day, or like vinegar poured on a wound, is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.”
Not every hurting heart is ready for cheerful words. Sometimes, our attempts to “lift someone’s spirits” can make them feel more alone, as if their pain is being ignored or minimised.
Singing songs to someone in deep sorrow is like stripping away their coat on a freezing day or pouring vinegar on an open wound.
There’s a time for encouragement, but there’s also a time for quiet empathy. When someone is hurting, they often need less advice and more presence—a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, and the reassurance that they’re not facing their pain alone.
Jesus Himself wept with those who wept [John 11:35]. We reflect His compassion when we meet people where they are, without rushing them to where we think they should be.
Prayer:
Father, give me wisdom to know when to speak and when to be silent. Teach me to offer empathy instead of empty cheer, and to comfort others with Your love and patience. Help me be a safe and understanding presence for those who are hurting. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Have a wonderful weekend being a source of empathy and comfort to others. God bless and lots’a love,
Warren
