Fiu Faaolatane Ponifasio Vasa remains the elected Member of Parliament for the Palauli 2 constituency, after a final count before the District Court of Samoa today.
The official count by the Office of the Electoral Commissioner concluded that Fiu Ponifasio had won the Palauli 2 seat by a single vote. Faaolatane Fiu Tuala Iona Pa’o polled 631 votes to Fiu Ponifasio Vasa’s 632.
Both candidates had edged out incumbent MP for Palauli 2, Hon Leota Laki Lamositele Sio who only secured 251 votes.
Eleven Constituencies are having their ballots recounted before the District Court of Samoa, following applications lodged by unsuccessful candidates of the recent general elections.
Under S85 of the Electoral Act of Samoa, candidates may apply within 3 days of the official count to have their ballots recounted before the District Court.
This section of the Law is often utilised by candidates who lose by narrow margins such as the case for Palauli 2.
Prior to running for the election, Fiu Faaolatane Ponifasio Vasa was the Head of Samoa’s Births, Deaths and Marriages Registry. He also held the role of President of the Samoa Rugby League.
Fiu had registered to run the 2025 Samoan general election as an Independent candidate, though with the full endorsement and backing of the FAST Party.
Another Independent candidate, Faalogo Kapiliele Faalogo is expected to join the FAST party tomorrow – taking their number to 32.
