STAY AWAKE AND BE SOBER
1Thessalonians 5:6-7 “So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.”
Because we are children of the light, Paul tells us how we should live while we wait for Christ’s return. We are to be “AWAKE AND SOBER.” He’s speaking about spiritual alertness and self-control.
To be spiritually asleep is to live carelessly, with little thought for God, His Word, or eternity. We can become so occupied with work, money, entertainment, possessions, relationships, and the concerns of everyday life that we gradually become spiritually dull. Prayer becomes less important. Scripture is neglected. Sin becomes easier to tolerate. Our love for Christ begins to cool.
Paul says, “Let us not be like others.” CHRISTIANS SHOULD LIVE DIFFERENTLY. We know that Christ is coming again, so we should remain spiritually awake. We should regularly examine our lives, guard against temptation, remain grounded in Scripture, pray faithfully, and continue serving the Lord.
Paul also tells us to be “sober.” While his reference to drunkenness certainly reminds us of the dangers of intoxication, his point is broader. A sober Christian has a clear mind and practises self-control. We shouldn’t allow alcohol, substances, entertainment, emotions, desires, or anything else to control us. We belong to Christ.
Spiritual alertness doesn’t mean living anxiously or constantly searching world events for signs of Christ’s return. It means faithfully following Jesus every day.
Ask yourself, “Am I spiritually awake? Has anything begun to dull my hunger for God or weaken my commitment to His Word?”
Christ is coming again. Until He does, stay awake, remain sober, and faithfully walk with Him.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help me to remain spiritually awake and alert. Guard me from becoming distracted, careless, or comfortable with sin. Give me self-control and a clear mind so that nothing takes control of my life except Your Holy Spirit. Keep me faithful in prayer, grounded in Your Word, and ready for the return of Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Have a wonderful day. God bless and lots’a love,
Warren
