Head Coach Names Theodore McFarland as Captain of Manu Samoa

Monday 1st July 2024 Apia Samoa. Manu Samoa’s Head Coach, Mase Mahonri Schwalger has appointed local favorite rugby star from the SSAB Moamoa Roosters Club as his first named Captain of the Manu Samoa.

Theodore McFarland will lead the Men in Blue into the future as Schwalger rebuilds the national side towards Rugby World Cup 2027.

Coach Schwalger said the most important element he looked at was character and Theodore McFarland’s character was everything the Manu Samoa stood for.

“He is the Manu Samoa.. the way he walks the way he trains.. he represents the essence of the Manu Samoa,” said Mase.

Theodore has been tagged by the Head Coach to take Samoa to the next Rugby World Cup and will begin his reign by leading the Men in Blue into battle against Italy at Apia Park Stadium this Friday 5 July 2024.

McFarland is a double international for Samoa, representing his country at the Pacific Games in basketball before making the serious switch to rugby when he was approached by Manu Samoa 7s Coach Muliagatele Brian Lima in 2019.

McFarland scored a try during his debut for Samoa in July 2021 during a World Cup Qualifying match against Tonga in Apia, having played two non-cap internationals against the Māori All Blacks before that.

Standing at 6’6″ the former Moamoa Roosters Captain signed with Gallagher Premiership side Saracens in August 2021 where he has made 34 appearances and clocked up 45 points.

During a press conference with local media Head Coach Mase Mahonri Schwalger says he has been observing McFarland over recent years of Manu Samoa campaigns including the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

“I’ve had the opportunity to work with Theodore in recent campaigns and believe he has the leadership abilities to lead the Manu Samoa,” said Mase.

“He is a player with experience, and has the right set of skills. He has my trust to lead the Manu Samoa into the future.”

“He is loyal and doesn’t seek to play for money,” said Mase who also shared about the limited resources available to the team.

McFarland said he did not expect the call-up from management and was surprised when approached to take up the role.

He thanked the head coach and management for trusting him in the role and said he will work to the best of his ability to respond to the calling.

“I will work together with my brothers and our senior players.. and give it our all for the upcoming two test matches against Italy and Spain.”

The Manu Samoa is set to play Italy on Friday 5 July 2024 at 5pm, and Spain on Saturday 13th July 2024 kicking off at 4pm.
