SWA Staff Member Returns from Specialised Training in Japan

Samoa was represented by Ms. Litia Tana, Senior Technician within the Urban & Maintenance Division of the Samoa Water Authority at the JICA Knowledge Co-Creation Program (KCCP) on Non-Revenue Water Management (Leakage Control), held at the Chubu Center in Japan.

This program is part of JICA’s continuous efforts to develop technical capacity within the water sector.

It focuses on strengthening the skills of professionals involved in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of water supply systems.

Ms. Litia Tana’s training centered on leakage prevention and enhancing the efficiency of water distribution networks.

Participants from various countries were afforded comprehensive learning opportunities, covering leakage detection, repair techniques, and preventive strategies.

The course included a balanced mix of lectures, site visits, hands-on practical exercises, group discussions, and formal presentations

Additionally, each participant was tasked with developing an Action Plan detailing how they will apply the knowledge and skills gained upon returning to their respective countries.

Reflecting on her participation, Ms. Tana expressed sincere appreciation for the professional development and cultural experiences gained during her time in Japan.

The program addresses a pressing international challenge, particularly in developing countries where water distribution systems face ongoing issues with high leakage rates.

In many affected regions, treated water does not fully reach consumers due to infrastructure deficiencies, resulting in reduced pressure, service interruptions, and, in severe cases, contamination risks.

This specialised training equips water professionals with practical tools and knowledge to mitigate these challenges and improve overall service delivery.
