By: Jasmine Netzler, Gvt Press Secretariat. Government has approved the Unit Trust of Samoa to start operations for taking in registrations of interested shareholders for Samoa’s National Air carrier.
Interested persons are urged to visit UTOS this week to register their names, villages and how much they wish to invest into the venture.
Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt said in his weekly press conference with local media on Monday that the investment venture is open to both locals and the Samoa diaspora.

“It is an opportunity for them to have a stake in Samoa’s airline.”
Laaulialemalietoa says the Government is looking at the purchase of two aircrafts before the end of 2026, to improve Samoa’s air transportation services.
“This will not just be beneficial for the people here in Samoa but Samoan’s anywhere in the world for easy access to travelling to Samoa,” he said.
The Prime Minister added that UTOS would be carrying out an awareness campaign to ensure the people of Samoa fully understand how the initiative works.

Shares start from a minimum investment of $500 tala, with more shares available to investors if they wish.
The UTOS has launched an online registration system, with a platform that allows for easier connection by interested individuals in purchasing shares.
According to the Prime Minister since Samoa’s Independence, the national airline carrier has yet to be fully operational at the highest level.

He reflected on the success of Fiji Airways as a well established airline, because of it’s business focus and governance structures.
“It’s constitution and regulations are well in place.”
Adding that the airline should be operated as a business to yield more favourable outcomes.

UTOS is an initiative of the Government of Samoa created under the Unit Trusts Act 2008.
Its primary goal is to provide an affordable and accessible investment vehicle for local and overseas-based Samoans and Samoan businesses.

It allows ordinary Samoans, such as small farmers or fishermen, to participate in large-scale investments and the country’s future developments.
This allow participation, not only in Samoa’s future developments but also in allowing them to access large-scale investment opportunities in privately owned companies.
