1Thessalonians 5:8 “But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.”
Previously, Paul reminded us that we are children of the light. Now he tells us how to live in a spiritually dark world. We are to remain sober and spiritually alert, protected by faith, love, and hope.
These three qualities have appeared throughout this letter. In the opening chapter, Paul remembered their “work produced by faith,” their “labour prompted by love,” and their “endurance inspired by hope.” Now, as he prepares to finish his letter, he returns to faith, love, and hope again.
Faith protects us because it keeps our confidence firmly placed in God. When circumstances are difficult, faith reminds us that God is faithful, His Word is trustworthy, and His promises remain true.
Love protects our hearts from bitterness, hatred, selfishness, and unforgiveness. When we remember how deeply God has loved us through Christ, we are able to extend grace, patience, forgiveness, and compassion to others.
Hope protects our minds. Paul calls it “the hope of salvation.” Whatever happens in this life, our future is secure in Jesus Christ. Our salvation rests in Him, and we look forward to the day when He returns and completes the work He began in us.
Notice that Paul tells us to “put on” these things. Faith, love, and hope shouldn’t remain abstract Christian ideas. THEY SHOULD SHAPE THE WAY WE THINK AND LIVE EVERY DAY.
When fear comes, put on faith. When relationships become difficult, choose love. When circumstances seem hopeless, remember the salvation that’s yours in Christ.
We belong to the day. So let’s live every day protected by faith, love, and hope.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You that I belong to You through Jesus Christ. Strengthen my faith when I am afraid, increase my love when relationships are difficult, and renew my hope when I become discouraged. Help me to remain spiritually alert and confident in the salvation You have given me. May faith, love, and hope shape the way I live each day. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Have a fabulous day. God bless and lots’a love,
Warren
