CHOOSING OUR COMPANY

Ephesians 5:7 “Therefore do not be partners with them.”

Paul’s instruction here is brief, yet it carries significant weight. After warning against deception and lifestyles that contradict God’s truth, he urges believers to be discerning about the company they keep. This isn’t a call to isolation, but rather a call to wisdom.

To be a “partner” is to share in values, priorities, and direction. Paul reminds the church that the people we align ourselves with shape us. When we align ourselves with attitudes or behaviours that contradict God’s ways, our witness is weakened, and our hearts can slowly drift.

This verse doesn’t forbid relationships with unbelievers—Jesus Himself ate with sinners—but it does challenge us to examine influence. Are we being shaped, or are we shaping? Are we compromising convictions to belong, or standing firm in love and truth?

As children of light, our lives are meant to reflect Christ clearly. Sometimes faithfulness means gracious distance, choosing obedience over acceptance, and letting our allegiance to Christ remain unmistakable.

Prayer:
Father, grant me wisdom in my relationships and discernment in my choices. Help me to walk faithfully with You, never compromising truth for comfort or approval. Teach me to love others well while remaining firmly anchored in Christ. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
