THE DANGER OF PRIDE

Galatians 5:26 “Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.”

Chapter 5 concludes with a warning that strikes at the heart of many church and relationship problems. Conceit is an inflated view of ourselves. It’s pride that seeks recognition, superiority, and attention. It measures worth by comparing ourselves with others. Where pride takes root, relationships suffer. And Paul identifies two common results, “Provoking and envying each other.”

Some people provoke others because they think too highly of themselves. They compete, boast, and seek to prove their superiority. Others envy because they think too little of themselves. They resent the gifts, opportunities, or blessings God has given to others. Both attitudes come from the same problem; taking our eyes off Christ and placing them on ourselves.

The gospel frees us from this trap. At the foot of the cross, there’s no room for boasting. Everything we have is by grace. Every gift, every opportunity, and every blessing comes from the hand of God. When we understand this, pride begins to fade.

We no longer need to compete, we no longer need to compare, and we no longer need to envy. Instead, we can rejoice in what God is doing in the lives of others and serve one another with humility.

This verse also connects naturally with the fruit of the Spirit we looked at previously. Love, kindness, gentleness, and self-control can’t flourish where pride dominates the heart. A Spirit-filled believer doesn’t live in comparison with others, but in humble gratitude before God. Pride divides but grace unites.

Prayer:
Father, guard my heart from pride, comparison, and envy. Help me to remember that everything I have comes from Your grace. Teach me to rejoice in the blessings of others and to walk humbly before You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
