Several members of the public have been scammed this week by a person posing as prominent business owners by creating copy-cat WhatsApp accounts.

A man posing as former Attorney General and Director of SSAB, Tuatagaloa Aumua Ming Leung Wai, has been using a WhatsApp account to place orders and scam other business owners.

Manumailagi Caterers at Siusega were called by a man posing as Aumua, who placed an oder to be delivered to the Samoa Stationery and Books (SSAB) Superstore in Apia.

“He then called back and said, he’d like the delivery to make a stop and drop off one of the plates to a woman waiting at SMI.”

“He then called the delivery team to say, can you give cash to her as well, and when you get here, I’ll pay for the order and your money.”

The Manumailagi delivery arrived at SSAB only to be told by staff that it was a scam, and that SSAB Marketing Manager Asomua Asia Stanley, had been posting on social media to warn the public about a couple posing as her boss.

The woman who took the food and money had on a black sleeveless top and black shorts. Her hair was dyed blonde.

Asomua Asia had posted three days ago to say several members of the public had been affected by the scammer.

The scammer is not working alone, and also uses several numbers with (685) 7561610 being set up as a WhattsApp account with a profile picture of Tuatagaloa Aumua and his wife Tofilau Fiti Leung Wai.

Other phone numbers being used by the scammers include: 7561778, 7351834 and 7639844.

SGN understands that Digicel and Vodafone have both been given warrants to search their systems for the names of those whom the numbers have been registered.

“Please be vigilant and warn your friends and family — especially small business owners and delivery workers. We’re angry and upset, and we’re not stopping until we find the people responsible,” said five.
