SVSG President Siliniu Lina Chang has sent out a message to Samoa from the bedside of a teenage boy who is struggling with his life at Motootua National Hospital. Blessing Fale was in his final year of high school and the Head Boy of Maluafou College. He would be sitting his final exams this week and looking forward to graduating this year.

“Stop the Violence, Please! Fa’amolemole, Taofi Nei Sauaga!” said the SVSG President as Samoa and the world prepare for the beginning of the annual 16 Days of Activism to advocate against the pandemic of domestic and sexual violence affecting women and children in homes across Samoa.

Blessing has been hospitalised since White Sunday weekend in October, after he was brutaly attacked and beaten by five drunken men in Vaigaga. His grandfather had told SGN at the time that his grandson had been to a birthday party that night. He was walking home with a friend when they were attacked in a senseless act of violence.

“This is a very hard pill for us to swallow,” said Seumanutafa Fiti. “It is very hard to not want to retaliate and avenge what has happened to my grandson, but we are leaving it in the hands of police,” adds the grieving grandfather who said he had to rush to Upolu from Savaii when he heard the news on White Sunday.

Doctors say emergency surgery was performed and that Blessing had suffered severe damage to his brain. His grandfather says he is able to breath on his own, and regain movement, but he is responding very slowly to treatment.

As Samoa prepares for the launch of the 2025 “16 Days of Activism Against Violence,” SVSG urges our government leaders, communities, and families to stand together and fight against violence.

“It must end now,” pleads Siliniu.

“An innocent young life was attacked by drunken men while he was on his way home one evening. His devastated mother and family remain by his side each day as he struggles to recover in his hospital bed,” said the SVSG President.

SVSG’s visit was not only motivated by its mission to support victims of crime, such as this young man, but also by the fact that his mother is a dedicated SVSG village representative who has long served as an advocate for ending violence at the community level.

Presiden Siliniu Lina Chang expressed her deep sadness upon witnessing the condition of the young boy. She emphasized the violation of his rights to education, to live in a safe community, and to be part of a society free from violence.

“Ia tatou galuluefa’atasi, inaiataofineiloasauagai Samoa. Ua tele onaa’afiagai o tatou aiga, nu’u, Ekalesia, uao’o lava inai a tatou fanaupele.”
