This week, economic leaders and financial experts from across the Pacific are in Samoa to attend a “Cash and Debt Management Regional Workshop” hosted by PFTAC: the Pacific Financial Technical Assistance Centre.
For more than three decades, PFTAC has been helping Pacific countries strengthen the foundations of economic growth and resilience.
From modernising tax systems and improving budgeting practices to enhancing public financial management and financial sector oversight.
PFTAC, a regional centre of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), supports 16 Pacific Island countries through technical assistance and capacity development.
PICs are supported in various areas including public financial management, revenue administration, macroeconomic forecasting, government finance statistics and financial sector supervision.
Hosting the regional conference reinforces Samoa’s growing role as a hub for Pacific dialogue and cooperation on economic and financial governance.
Discussions throughout the week are expected to focus on practical strategies to strengthen fiscal management, improve public sector performance and build resilient economies capable of responding to future challenges.
The outcomes of the meeting will help shape PFTAC’s ongoing technical assistance programme and strengthen collaboration among Pacific countries and development partners.
Speaking at the opening, New Zealand High Commissioner to Samoa, Her Excellency Si’alei van Toor, reaffirmed New Zealand’s commitment to supporting stronger economic governance and institutions across the Pacific.
The High Commissioner said regional cooperation and investment in public sector capability are critical to ensuring Pacific countries are well equipped to manage future economic shocks and deliver better outcomes for their people.

The High Commissioner also acknowledged PFTAC’s long-standing role in helping Pacific governments strengthen financial management, taxation systems and economic policy, noting that resilient institutions are fundamental to sustainable development.
