Brisbane Broncos star Payne Haas has once again made it clear that his international future belongs with Samoa, despite ongoing speculation from Australian media and renewed interest in seeing him return to the Kangaroos.
Ever since Haas switched his allegiance to Samoa for last year’s Pacific Championships, questions have continued to surface about whether he could one day reverse that decision and wear the green and gold again.
The speculation intensified after Australia coach Kevin Walters revealed he intended to contact Haas ahead of the Rugby League World Cup in the hope of convincing him to return.
“I would love to have Payne back,” Walters said, adding that he planned to discuss Haas’ mindset and determine where he felt most comfortable playing.
But Haas has emphatically shut the door on any suggestion of a backflip.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, the Broncos prop said there was “no way in hell” he would go back on the commitment he made to represent Samoa.
“I made my decision last year to move to Samoa from Australia and the kind of person I am, I wouldn’t do that and backflip on them,” Haas said.
“I want to represent my mum and my grandmother and my granddad as well, and there’s no way in hell I’d do that.”
Haas’ comments reaffirm his loyalty to Samoa and the deeply personal reasons behind his decision. Rather than viewing his choice as temporary, the powerhouse forward has consistently described it as a commitment to honour his family’s heritage.
Despite repeated questions about a possible return to Australia, Haas has remained unwavering, making it clear that his heart is with Samoa and that his decision is final.
