Eight of the 12 teams who travelled to American Samoa for the 4th Vailima Marist Flag Day International 7s made it to the Cup quarterfinal stage after a fantastic Day 1 of matches.
The first quarterfinal on Day 2 saw two Marist teams battle it out. Marist St Joseph’s Sports Club from Upolu edged out the only visitors from NZ – Marist Samoa Auckland by 12 -7.
A sharp looking Safotu side secured a narrow win over Apia Maroons, also by a scoreline of 12-7.
Vaiala and Laulii were tied at full time of their quarterfinal match. Laulii crossed the line first at sudden death time to end Vaiala’s hopes for the Cup.
The last quarterfinal for the Cup between Tepatasi and Tamauli saw the Rev Malo Sefo coached side too good for the only Savaii team in the tournament.
The 9th place semifinal will see the two teams from Falealili meet up. Alalagafa had beaten Nuuuli by 43-7 while Satalo edged infront of Malie by 7-5.
The Plate or 5th place semis will see Marist Auckland up against Apia Maroons and Vaiala play Tamauli.
The semifinal of the Cup will see Marist v Safotu and Laulii v Tepatasi.
The last four advancing to the semis will be vying for the Lemanu Cup – with a prize money of US$12,000. All matches will undoubtedly be a display of quality rugby 7s by grassroots players from across the two Samoa’s.
