Australia has announced an additional WST $19.2 million (AUD $10 million) in budget support to help the Government of Samoa continue delivering essential services to communities across the country.
Speaking during the announcement, Australia’s High Commissioner to Samoa, William Robinson, acknowledged that Samoa, like many Pacific nations, has been affected by disruptions to global fuel supply chains, leading to higher fuel prices and increased financial pressure on families and the Government.
The additional funding is intended to help Samoa maintain critical public services, including healthcare, education, and other essential government operations.
Robinson said Australia understands the challenges Samoan families are facing as rising fuel prices continue to increase the cost of living.
“We know that increased fuel prices can leave a big hole in our budgets, and we want you to know that Australia stands with Samoa during these tough times,” he said.
He explained that the financial support is designed to provide practical assistance where it is needed most.
“That funding is intended to provide practical assistance for essential services to help keep the lights on, to help keep schools open, and to help keep hospital services running,” Robinson said.
He also highlighted the close relationship between Samoa and Australia, emphasising the importance of standing together during difficult times.
“Here in the Pacific, family is everything, and everything begins with family, and family shows up when it matters most,” he said.
Robinson concluded his remarks with the Samoan proverb:
“O le tele o lima e māmā ai se avega.”
The proverb, which means “Many hands make light work,” reflects the spirit of partnership between Samoa and Australia, emphasising that by working together, both nations can help ease the burden and support one another through challenging times.
