Historical Milestone for Local Female Referee at Sato’alepai Men’s Rugby 7s Final

In a groundbreaking moment for Lakapi Samoa, local referee Hani Isamaeli made history last week by becoming the first woman to officiate Men’s Division rugby 7s final.

The inaugural Satoalepai 7s final was especially significant as it also marked the first time an all-female team of Match Officials oversaw the championship match.

“This underscoring the rapid progress of women in rugby officiating and Lakapi Samoa’s commitment to nurturing local talent,” said Rugby Chief Executive Officer Seumanu Douglas Ngau Chun.

Alongside Isamaeli, the Assistant Match Officials who contributed to this historic all-women officiating team were veteran International Referee Avii Faalupega and Tausala Talavou.

“Their collective achievement reflects the growing depth, skill, and professionalism of female officials within the domestic game.”

Hani Isamaeli said that when she saw the appointments for the Vodafone Cup Final, she couldn’t believe it was her name.

“Standing on the field, I whispered to myself, ‘I can do it through Jesus Christ who strengthens me.”

“I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity and thankful for the chance to grow. I know it takes time to reach this level, but God’s timing is always the best. Trust, believe, and always think positive,” adds Isamaeli.

CEO Seumanu Douglas Ngau Chun said witnessing a female referee officiate the Men’s Cup Final for the first time in her career, for him, highlighted the capability of our women officials to excel at the highest level.
