Massive Village Matai Support for Laauli

15 February 2019, Apia Samoa. Former Speaker of the House and Cabinet Minister, Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao is still the MP for Gagaemauga No. 3 and will not resign from HRPP or Parliament.

This was revealed by the constituency during a press conference this morning.

The Chief of the village of Fagaee, Polataivao Paivalu and the To’oto’o o le Faletolu, Seve Avaula Panapa and matais from the villages of Sasina, Fagaee and Letui were all present at the press conference.

Laauli has the support of the constituency

Seve Avaula told the media the constituency has already decided during their village meeting on Monday this week that their MP will not resign.

“O le tulaga i le fa’amavae o le matou tofi, e pei ona matou fai atu, o le vaega fa’aupufai (HRPP) na iai tua’a ma tofi o lenei itumalo i le fa’avaeina.

“E lē fa’amavae fo’i le matou tofi, o le fa’aiuga lea o le tofa ma le fa’autautaga.”

He added, Laauli voiced exactly how the constituency felt in regards to the Electoral Amendment Bill and he fought by himself while others just sat and watched.

“Talofa e, ua tau to’atasi lou faiva auā se manuia o Salafai ona o lenei tulafono.

“I le matou maitau atu, ua fatifati le nofoa a Puleono i Salafai, ae o le matou lagona, o le tula’i o le matou tofi e tete’e le tulafono o le finagalo fo’i lea o lenei itumalo.”

Seve believed, the HRPP is not following their mandate of “What’s good for Upolu is also good for Savai’i.”

“We are here to support our MP and what he had raised in Parliament is exactly how we felt in regards to the law,” he said.

He added that any decision by the leader of the HRPP, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi about their MP, then that is his own decision, but reiterated that their constituency would not particiapte in a bi-election.

Polataivao echoed what Seve had revealed.

“The constituency has already decided,” he said.

“Laauli will not resign and we will not have a bi-election in future, because we don’t know who else will run against Laauli.

“There is no one else and we still want him to be our MP.”

“Ua uma ona liuliu le tofā ma ua uma ona tasi le faautautaga I le Malae i Fulugia e le faamave ma le tofi ma e leai foi se palota e toe faia aua e leiloa poo ai sesi e toe sau e palota ma Laauli.
