The Samoa Meteorological Services have confirmed the TSUNAMI WATCH previously in effect for SAMOA is now CANCELLED!
However, Tsunami Advisory remains in effect for Samoa due to ongoing eruptions at the Hunga Tonga Volcano. Members of the public in low-lying coastal areas are advised to stay away from the sea and beaches.
To avoid confusion, a tsunami watch previously in effect was cancelled at 5.30am this morning, and downgraded to an Advisory threshold due to ongoing eruptions in Tonga.

TSUNAMI ADVISORY
A volcanic eruption occurred within the Tongan Region, on Saturday 15th January at 5:26 pm (Samoa Local Time)
Tsunami advisory remains for all Samoa’s coastal areas due to fluctuations in tide levels but there is no immediate tsunami threat for Samoa.
Due to these sea level fluctuations the public is therefore advised to stay away from the coastal areas.
BULLETINS ISSUED BY THE SAMOA METEOROLOGY DIVISION REPRESENT THE OFFICIAL WARNING STATUS FOR SAMOA.
The next bulletin will be issued at 6:00 pm Sunday 16 January 2022.
Tsunami related information are in place for several Pacific island nations, parts of New Zealand, the east coast of Australia and Japan.
The public is also advised that a marine advisory is also in effect due to winds of 25-35 km/h and waves of about 3.0 meters or more due to the current unstable weather conditions therefore, please be cautious near shorelines and in the waters as strong currents will be possible.
A video captured by witnesses shows the 8 minute explosion of the underwater volcano Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai that erupted on Saturday afternoon sending tsunami warnings and tsunami watch advisories across the Pacific.
