Cyclone Sarai was declared a Category 1 cyclone at 3am on Friday morning.

Metservice meteorologist Micky Malivuk said the cyclone was making its way towards Fiji and may be even stronger by the time it makes landfall.

“It’s tracking south just to the west of Fiji. Currently, it’s a Category 1, it will intensify to Category 2 by 1am on Saturday, which means storm-force winds”.

He added that holidaymakers are being urged to check their flight schedules as airlines make last minute changes because of Tropical Cyclone Sarai.

Fiji Airways announced that up to 54 domestic and international flights in and out of Fiji had been affected.
They include two Auckland-bound flights (FJ418 and FJ412) from Nadi that have had to be cancelled because of bad weather conditions.

Other flights from Nadi to Samoa, Los Angeles and Melbourne have all been brought forward in a bid to avoid the worst of the cyclone.

This is a developing story. We will be updating flight changes in and out of Apia as soon as they are received from Fiji Airways Apia office.
