Sunday 30 January 2022, Government Press Secretariat Update. Samoa has three more positive cases of Covid-19 taking the country’s total to 30.
The Ministry of Health confirmed the new cases by press release on Samoa’s Government Facebook page on Sunday afternoon.
A 4 year old child is reported to be one of the three new positive cases, identified from among the passengers of the Brisbane repatriation flight that arrived into Samoa last Wednesday 19th January.
According to the Ministry, all 30 positive cases remain asymptomatic and there is still no evidence of a community transmission.
“All frontline workers in quarantine other than the 5 nurses at the isolation unit in Moto’otua Hospital continue to return negative tests after their third round of testing”.
“Stay tuned for more information”, ends the press statement.
Samoa has been on Alert Level 2 since Friday 29 Jan, after six days of a nation-wide lockdown. Samoa went into a 48-hour Alert Level 3 lockdown last Saturday 22 January triggered when the number of positive cases had reached 15. The lockdown was extended a further 4 days when the numbers reached 26. A 27th case was announced on Thursday as “breaking news” on the Government Facebook page.
Prime Minister Hon Fiame Naomi Mataafa said the decision to re-open with Level 2 restrictions was based on the advice of the Ministry of Health and NEOC that all positive cases are in managed isolation and there was no evidence of a community transmission.
Samoa has 301 people being monitored in managed isolation; 73 passengers and 228 frontline workers who attended to the flight processing when it arrived last Wednesday 19th January.
