Proverbs 31:30 “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
The book of Proverbs closes this portrait of a godly woman with a powerful reminder of what really matters.
Charm can be deceiving—it may look impressive on the surface but often hides a lack of substance. Beauty, no matter how striking, is temporary; it will fade with time.
But the fear of the Lord (living in reverence, awe, and surrender to Him) endures forever.
To fear the Lord is to put Him first in every area of life. It means honouring Him with our decisions, walking in obedience to His Word, and shaping our lives around His will rather than our own desires. This is the foundation of true wisdom, and it’s what sets apart the life that pleases God.
This is also what gives life its true and lasting worth. Outward appearance will one day fade, but a heart that fears and loves God shines brighter with age. That kind of life leaves behind more than memories—it leaves a legacy of faith. It blesses families, strengthens churches, influences generations, and most of all, brings glory to God.
The praise of people comes and goes, but the approval of God lasts forever. That’s why Scripture says the woman who fears the Lord is to be praised—not because of her charm or beauty, but because her life points to the One who never changes.
Prayer:
Father, teach me to live in holy fear of You. Keep me from chasing after what fades, and help me to build my life on what lasts. May my choices, my words, and my actions honour You above all else. And may the legacy I leave be one of faith, devotion, and love for You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
