SCOPA-USA Inc has pledged ST$50,000 towards the Samoa College STEM Project, turning the support shown at its Las Vegas Meet and Greet into a contribution for students back in the homeland.
“This reflects our shared commitment to give back to the school that helped shape us,” SCOPA-USA Chairman Tofilau Atatagi Tofilau said in a statement issued by the incorporated association’s Executive Board.
Proceeds from the Las Vegas fiafia nights and annual registrations have contributed to the pledge.
Tofilau thanked donors, those who attended and participated, and supporters who helped from afar.
“Fa’afetai tele lava. You helped make this possible,” he said.
The funds will be transferred to a Samoa College Account at the SMI Hardware, where materials for the STEM project will be sourced and supplied.
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The Samoa College project is intended to create more opportunities for students to learn and grow in these key fields.
At a recent career event, the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa SROS showed students how scientific work connects to agriculture, renewable energy and other opportunities in Samoa.
The pledged funds have not yet been transferred.
SCOPA-USA President, Sialofi Fuatogi said that as a new organisation, they are completing the legal and administrative steps needed to send the money to Samoa.
“That process is nearing completion, and we will share an update when the funds are ready to be transferred,” he said.
Fuatogi also said the executive boards of SCOPA Samoa, SCOPA New Zealand and SCOPA USA have been discussing how to work more closely together for the school and former pupils worldwide.
SCOPA-USA say they are aligning visions across borders “to strengthen impact better support our beloved school, and create even greater value for all our members worldwide..”
The 2027 Meet & Greet is now scheduled for Sep 17 – 19 in Long Beach, Los Angeles California.
