The Samoa Wrestling Team have won two Gold Medals during the Greco-Roman Roman style of the first day of the Oceania Wrestling Championships and Olympic Qualifiers 2024 held in Guam.
President of Samoa Wrestling Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork said it is an outstanding achievement by Samoa’s two-man team led by athlete-coach Gaku Akazawa and his former student now team mate, Willie Alofipo.
Gaku Akazawa won a Gold medal for his adopted country Samoa in the Mens 67kg division, while Willie Alofipo won Gold in the Mens 96kg division.
“Samoa will compete today in the Freestyle discipline the we hope to win more medals,” said Tuaopepe.
“We are wishing Gaku and Willie all the best for today, and congratulation them both on the two Gold Medals”.
In August last year, Gaku Akazawa had been the Coach while Maulalo Willie and his brother Joshua Alofipo had also both won Gold Medals for Samoa at the Oceania Senior Wrestling event for Greco-Roman Style, held at the Australian Institute of Sports in Canberra.
The Alofipo brothers are sons of Faatuatua i Le Atua Samoa Ua Tasi (FAST) Party Secretary, Va’aaoao Alofipo.
The brothers have been training hard under the guidance of Samoa Wrestling Head Coach, Mr Gaku Akazawa and Samoa Wrestling Federation President, Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork at the Tuanaimato High Performance Unit.
