The Samoa Police, Prisons & Corrections Services (SPPCS) have today issued a public notice to reaffirm Government’s zero-tolerance approach to illegal drugs, maintaining that the publication of drug offenders is a necessary measure for public protection and a critical tool for deterrence.

“This practice is consistent with our statutory functions under Section 5 of the Police Service Act 2009, which mandates the Police to maintain law and order, protect life and property, and prevent, detect, and investigate crimes throughout Samoa.”

With Government Border Control Officials being targeted by the organised drug trade, SPPCS says the high level of transparency it is taking ensures that no individual, including civil servants or high-ranking officials, is shielded from the consequences of their actions, thus allowing them to maintain law and order.

“The SPPCS remains committed to responsible and lawful communication, ensuring that all publications comply with legal requirements, including the protection of minors and the integrity of ongoing court processes.”

SPPCS have set out why the publication of all drug-raid related information is essential for upholding Samoa’s war against drugs:

1. Protection Of Our Children and Schools
The drug landscape in 2026 continues to present evolving risks to our youth, with incidents recorded among school-aged children. By publicizing offender information, we allow parents, guardians, and educators to remain vigilant. This transparency is vital in identifying individuals who may pose a threat to our most vulnerable populations.

2. Maintaining Law and Order through Transparency
Samoa’s borders are under constant pressure from international and domestic drug syndicates. Informing the public of successful raids and arrests – such as the significant methamphetamine seizures in late 2025 – reinforces the message that Samoa will not become a sanctuary for illegal drug activity.

3. Strengthening Community Partnership through Crime Prevention
This transparency is a key component of our ongoing “Say No to Illegal Drugs” Campaign. Sharing details of these crimes helps the community understand the scale of the threat and encourages the “If You See It, Report It!” partnership.

4. Deterrence Through Public Accountability
Publicizing raids and details of arrests serves as a powerful deterrent. By ensuring that the consequences of drug trafficking and possession – which can carry life imprisonment penalties – are visible to all, we discourage others from entering the trade.

SPPCS states it will continue to take firm action against illegal drugs for the safety of the people of Samoa, and especially for “the protection of our children and families, and the continued wellbeing of our communities.”

Samoa Police also thanked the public for their continued cooperation and support in keeping Samoa safe.
