Samoa is hosting the fifth Executive Board Meeting of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) this week, bringing Pacific representatives together to discuss the region’s growing environmental challenges.
The meeting is being held at the Pacific Climate Change Centre/SPREP from 12–13 August 2026.
SPREP Director General Sefanaia Nawadra said the organisation remains focused on helping Pacific communities respond to the “triple planetary crises” of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, along with increasing disaster risks.
He said the challenges facing Pacific communities are closely connected, making regional cooperation essential.
The meeting is also being used to assess SPREP’s progress since the 32nd SPREP Meeting, including its annual report and performance implementation plan.
Another key focus is the development of SPREP’s next Strategic Plan, with members reviewing the initial draft ahead of its presentation at next year’s SPREP Meeting.
Nawadra also highlighted SPREP’s regional and international engagement, particularly its work with the Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific (CROP) and the implementation of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.
Pacific priorities at major international meetings will also be discussed, including COP31 on climate change and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) COP.
The Executive Board brings together representatives from across the Pacific, including Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia, metropolitan members and French-speaking members.
SPREP’s work is aimed at protecting the Pacific’s environment and natural resources while supporting sustainable development and building a more resilient Pacific for future generations.
