The Samoa Ministry of Health have issued a statement to notify the public of the increased number if influenza-like illnesses reported to the main hospital at Motootua since the 5th of April 2023.

Signed by MOH CEO also Samoa’s Director General of Health, Aiono Dr Alex Ekeroma, Samoa is put on notice that increased cases of the flu have been reported in neighboring Pacific Island countries such as Fiji, Tonga and French Polynesia or New Caledonia.

The public are asked to be more vigilant in basic preventative measures and Aiono says the return to normalcy post-covid lockdowns has made many of us a little too relaxed.

“Therefore it is no surprise to see the increasing number of influenza illnesses,” he writes.

Our young children, our elderly and pregnant women, those with underlying heart or lung conditions as well as our health care workers are most at risk.

We are all asked to be aware of simple but important ways to help prevent the spread of the flu.
