The Government of Samoa has extended the Covid-19 State of Emergency by another month, bringing it to exactly one year since the country has gone into lockdown due to the global pandemic.

Samoa first went into a 2-week State of Emergency on Saturday 21st March 2020. A further 2 weeks was declared, and Samoa has since extended its SOE status by 30 days each month.

The end does not seem near for the global pandemic with a second strain of the virus now causing researchers to ask more questions.

Stuart Ray, M.D., Vice Chair of medicine for data integrity and analytics at John Hopkins is an expert in SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

“We are seeing multiple variants of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that are different from the version first detected in China,” he says.

Globally as of today, the coronavirus has claimed 2,379,140 people. The world currently has 25,424,013 active cases, 9.6 million of those in the United States.

Samoa remains Covid-19 free, with the only positive test results being from historical cases of repatriated citizens whove been in quarantine.

Over 20 repatriation flight operations have been successfully processed for Samoa, to bring its citizens home since international borders closed a year ago. One flight arrived into Samoa this afternoon.

Samoa’s State of Emergency Orders remain unchanged according to the latest government release.
