15 January 2021 Apia Samoa Samoa has announced the extension of its State of Emergency period from the 17th of January 2022 for another month to the 13th of February 2022.
The month on month extensions have been in place since Samoa first declared a State of Emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020.
A Press Secretariat release confirms the extension was approved by Cabinet this week, at its meeting of Wednesday 12th January 2022.
The announcement confirms that all previous restrictions remain in place including further easing of business closing times announced before Christmas for the festive season.
Samoa’s State of Emergency orders shifted substantially with the change of administration. Many of the previous restrictions such as Sunday trading, travel between Upolu and Savaii, and limited opening hours for businesses were all removed by the FAST government within a week of taking over in July 2021.
Under the previous administration, Samoa was the first country in the world to impose pre-departure travel restrictions to protect its borders from the global pandemic, implemented in early 2020. Today, travel advisories are being imposed by all countries in the world.
Samoa remains COVID-19 free and has not had a community case since the global pandemic broke out in late 2019.
Samoa’s border control operations is a holistic approach being run by its National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) Chaired by the CEO of the Ministry of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (MPMC) Agafili Tomaimano Shem Leo.
Samoa’s frontliners are coordinated under NEOC while the Ministry of Health takes the lead in maintaining strict border restrictions and health control regulations whilst still allowing regular repatriation flights into Samoa.
