PUTTING OFF THE OLD SELF

Ephesians 4:22 “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires.”

Paul reminds us that salvation doesn’t just change our destination—it changes our way of life. When we came to Christ, we were taught to “put off” the old self like a worn-out garment that no longer fits who we are.

The old self is shaped by deceitful desires—cravings that promise satisfaction but leave us empty, habits that once ruled us but now have no rightful place in our lives. These desires corrupt, distort, and pull us away from God. But in Christ, we are no longer bound to them.

Putting off the old self isn’t a one-time event; it’s a daily act of surrender. Each day we choose to lay aside attitudes, words, and behaviours that belong to the past—anger, pride, impurity, selfishness, bitterness. These are incompatible with the new life we’ve received in Christ.

This is part of our discipleship: learning to refuse what once defined us and embracing who we are now in Jesus. His grace gives us the strength to say ‘no’ to the old and ‘yes’ to the new. We don’t fight the old self alone; the Spirit of God works in us, enabling real change.

Christ calls us into a life marked not by corruption but by renewal, holiness, and transformation. What we put off makes room for what He puts on.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for freeing me from my old way of life. Help me, by Your Spirit, to put off everything that belongs to the old self. Strengthen me daily to walk in the new life You have given me, with a heart that reflects Christ. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Have a great week. God bless and lots’a love,
Warren
