Following the appointment of several Chief Executive Officers across government ministries and public bodies last week, Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt has underscored the importance of establishing clear criteria and guidelines when selecting qualified individuals for senior government positions.
The Prime Minister stated that when an individual is reappointed to continue serving in a contractual government role for another three-year term, it reflects satisfaction with their performance and the way they have carried out their responsibilities.
However, he also stressed the importance of humility, continuous improvement, and strict compliance with the legal obligations attached to their roles.
Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa revealed that he has consulted with the Attorney General, who advised that a comprehensive review should be undertaken of the policies, frameworks, and procedures governing contractual services for all senior government appointments, particularly for those selected to leadership roles.
He further highlighted the need to fully implement new guidelines introduced by the Public Service Commission (P.S.C.), including the requirement for all new hires to undergo drug testing to ensure that no employee is involved with illegal substances.
In addition, the Prime Minister said provisions must be strengthened to safeguard the security and integrity of all government work undertaken by senior officials, particularly those entrusted with top-level responsibilities.
The Government’s overall intention, he said, is to ensure that all duties performed by those appointed to these critical positions are carried out with honesty, fairness, and accountability.
