Police officers are currently deployed at the National University of Samoa (NUS) following a series of brawls on campus over the past week.

According to a Samoa Police press statement, the presence of officers areound campus grounds is to “help maintain law and order and to preserve the peace” at the Lepapaigalagala campus.

“Following the circulation of footage that has attracted significant public attention regarding a student brawl at NUS, officers from the Samoa Police, Prisons and Correction Services (SPPCS) have been stationed at the university to provide security,” states the press release.

“The officers’ presence is intended to ensure public safety and to carry out their duties in accordance with the Police Service Act 2009.”

Video footage now widely circulating shows fighting on campus grounds from two separate incidents.

One video shows a student lying on the ground while others continue to kick and punch him. “He was struck on the head with a steel water bottle..”

The incident this week has been confirmed by NUS to be the result of heightened retaliations to an unresolved altercation from last week Friday, where a student under the influence of alcohol was swearing on campus grounds.

Sources say the same students were involved this week, but brought “more of their crew” to the fight.

Police say no arrests have been made and their investigation continues.

In April 2025, four NUS students were handed two-week suspensions following a brawl that had also gone viral on social media.

The NUS Deputy Vice-Chancellor Peseta Dr Desmond Lee Hang said at the time that NUS has a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of violence.

Peseta confirmed that a young woman who did not attend NUS had come onto campus with the intention of inflicting violence towards another young woman, stemming from an incident that occurred the Friday before.

CCTV cameras directly above the area where the brawl broke out allowed NUS to identity students involved and carry out an evidence-based investigation into the matter.

Of the 14 students that got involved, four students were found to have breached the University’s code of conduct and zero-tolerance-to-violence approach which had been adopted over 10 years ago.

“Most of the students involved had gone in with the intention of stopping the fight, however, when hit by punches, they, retaliated and joined in..” explained Peseta.
