Police Commissioner Auapaau Logoitino Filipo confirmed the Police were contacted by the man’s family at the end of last week.

Aupaau says a special search and rescue unit of the Samoa Police were mobilsed together with the Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA), however, efforts were unsuccessful.

The Police Commissioner says it is suspected the fisherman drowned while out at sea off the coast of Faleapuna.

Auapaau has called for the public to be more aware of water safety especially as we approach the end of the year.

“We are coming to the end of our journey this year, to the season and time where families come together and fellowship..

“We ask that safety is placed first and foremost.. and we all prioritise safety first.”

Last month a young man from Poutasi Falealili drowned while out with friends in the early hours of the palolo rising. His family held a special service for him by the sea last week after unsuccessful search missions by Police, FESA and villagers.
