Parliament Observes Moment of Silence to Honor Former MPs

The Samoa Parliament observed a moment of silence before its proceedings yesterday morning to remember and honor two former Members of Parliament who have recently passed away.

Former Member of Parliament for Vaimauga East and former Minister of Works, Matataualiitia Afa Lesa, 76, passed away at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital on Sunday.

The moment of silence also honored former Member of Parliament for Fa’asalele’aga No.2 and also a former Deputy Speaker of the House, Tuilagi Namulauulu Vavae Leo II who passed away in his village of Fatausi, Savaii last week.

Matataualiitia Afa Lesa is also remembered as a prominent accountant and Partner of Samoa’s regionally acclaimed Accounting and Auditing firm, Lesa ma Penn.

Matataualiitia has been remembered as a loving father in floods of messages from this children and grandchildren; and has been described as a pillar and matai of his family at Vaoala, who will be missed for his unique directness and loving leadership approach.

Having also served as Chair of Samoas Parliamentary Finance Committee, Matataualiitia held several board positions over the years, and passes away still serving Samoa as the current Chairman of the Samoa Shipping Corporation Board.

Speaker Toleafoa Leaupepe Faafisi offered condolences to families and friends of the two former Members of Parliament.

“On behalf of the Parliament of Samoa, I offer deepest condolences and sympathy to families, constituencies and close friends of our brothers who have passed on, and may we all stand in a minute of silence to honour these great leaders of Samoa,” the Speaker said.
