With Samoa still grappling to bring rising incidents of dengue fever under control, the Acting Director General of Health has issued a statement regarding the papaya leaf juice which many are saying is a cure for dengue.

“It cannot cure dengue fever, but it can help the strengthen the body’s immune system to fight against the virus,” said Tagaloa Dr. Robert Thomsen.

According to the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI) the absence of specific antiviral medications supports alternative dengue treatment strategies.

“South Asian countries have been using Carica papaya leaves as a traditional remedy for dengue for many years. Carica papaya possesses several biological features, including anti-inflammatory, antiviral, cancer-fighting, anti-diabetic, and antioxidant qualities.”

The Acting Director General of Health, Dr Thomsen agrees that research has shown the benefits of papaya leaf juice for cancer patients and dengue fever.

However, the DG warns against relying on alternative remedies as a way to avoid seeking medical treatment, especially for children and the elderly.

Dr Thomsen said there has been a notable rise in families using papaya leaf juice, however, he cautions the public and urges infected patients to seek medical advice as well.

“It is important to get proper instructions from doctors and not to self-diagnose.. to ensure patients receive the right care and guidance.”

Samoas cases are at 9,571 by the last official report and it has not yet peaked says the Health Director.

“The outbreak is expected to peak in three to four weeks..”

Samoa has recorded 6 deaths to dengue fever and last week, a total of 218 new admissions were recorded across hospitals in Upolu and Savai’i.
