Savusavu, Fiji, 23 September 2026. Journalists and media leaders from across the Pacific have gathered in Savusavu, Fiji, for the 8th Pacific Media Summit, where reaching remote island communities is a central focus.
The 5-day summit runs from 21 to 25 September at Wasawasa Lodge.
Its theme is “Reaching the Remote: Media and Digital Innovation for a Connected Blue Pacific.”
A key focus of the summit is making sure people living in remote communities have access to reliable information and that their voices are heard.
Journalists, editors, media leaders, academics and development partners are all taking part in discussions.
The Fijian Media Association is co-hosting with the Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) with close to 200 expected participants.
The Australian Government’s Pacific Media Assistance Scheme, PACMAS, is supporting media associations to attend the summit, including members of the media from Samoa.
The Samoa delegation is headed by JAWS President, Lagi Keresoma and JAWS Executive Member Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia.
Other members include Katalina Tovi’o from the Upumana TV, Elvin Savasopa, from the NUS media, Alofa Grace of Samoa Global News and JAWS Admin Officer Jocelynette Leilua.
PINA President, Kalafi Moala, said the summit provides an important opportunity for Pacific media to strengthen regional cooperation and innovation.
Delegates are discussing how digital tools can help newsrooms serve communities spread across the region’s islands.
The programme also covers media sustainability, press freedom, climate reporting and emerging technology.
The previous summit was held two years ago in Niue in September 2024.
