More than 50 women received training in business literacy and microfinance, and other business lessons through the Nofotane Samoa Social Enterprise Project (NSSE). Women from communities across Upolu who have completed life-skills training in recent months are now advancing to business training.
Funded by the European Union (EU) and administered by SVSG, the training introduces participants to the world of business.
Women producing sei, elei, sewn clothing, handicrafts, and agricultural products, are now learning how to transform their small-scale productions into business ventures.
The newest participants, who joined the Nofotane life-skills training in 2024, are particularly eager to learn and become empowered,” said SVSG President Siliniu Lina Chang.
“Discussions have been lively, as many women are enthusiastic about joining the business sector, especially after hearing success stories from Nofotane women who have already benefited from this project.’
Siliniu says these women are now running their own small businesses and earning income to support their families on a daily basis.
“Some have been able to create new business activities using the income earned from their Nofotane projects.”
This training teaches women about banking, saving, marketing, and ways to raise capital. SVSG can assist and support them with business license applications and provide confirmation to banks for their microfinance needs.
Siliniu said she is proud of the progress made by Nofotane women and in seeing them able to support their families and communities.
The Nofotane concept is a strategic approach for empowering one of the most affected groups of women in Samoa, those with low status in their husbands’ families.

“The SVSG Nofotane Project aims to empower these women economically so they can earn income and support their husbands, families, and children,” stressed the SVSG President.
“Achieving economic empowerment for Nofotane women will help reduce violence within families and communities.”
