
22 March, 2019. A new prison costing $600,000 tala is being constructed at Vai’a’ata for Savaii.
According to a Government Press Release, the new facilities funded by tax payers will house 100 prisoners and include a new administration building.
The project is part of the national initiative by the Samoa Prisons Authority to upgrade prison conditions in the country and was included in the current fiscal year’s budget.
A contingency of Cabinet Ministers travelled with the Prime Minister to Savai’i to witness the ground breaking ceremony on Thursday this week.
Joining the Prime Minister in Savaii this week were Minister of Works and Infrastructure, Papalii Unasa Niko Lee Hang, Finance Minister Sili Epa Tuioti, Prison Minister Tialavea Fea Leniu Tionisio Hunt, Health Minister Tuitama Dr. Talalelei Tuitama, Tourism Minister Sala Fata Pinati and Public Enterprise Minister Lautafi Fio Selafi Purcell.
The New Vai’a’ata Prison is expected to be completed before the end of June.
