Miss Samoa, Moemoana Safa’ato’a Schwenke has been crowned Miss Pacific Islands at the pageant’s final event in Nauru.
Moemoana took out four awards, including Best Interview, Best Talent, Best Traditional Wear and the Digicel People’s Choice award.
Miss Samoa lifted the bar of the talent category at the regional competition with her amazing siva afi performance. Moemoana has been taught the art by her father, Fred Schwenke, breaking the gender barrier in a cultural practice usually performed by men.
Moemoana wins Miss Pacific Islands 27 years after her mother, Mary Jane Mckibbon, who won the title in 1997.
Moemoana’s journey began when she was crowned Miss New South Wales in July 2023. Miss Schwenke won the Miss Samoa pageant less than two months later in September 2023.
The 23-year-old holds a Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Studies and Environmental Studies.
In earlier interviews Miss Schwenke says the gift of being a Samoan and Pacific Islander is a treasured gift.
“No matter what oceans I traverse, I carry Samoa with me to the utmost.”
“Fa’afetai mo lenei fa’aaloalo maualuga ua tu’uina mai mo lo’u nei tagata fa’atauva’a.”
