The Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) has today announced it will align its primary and secondary school rugby programmes with the newly established Samoa Rugby Football Union.

“The Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) wishes to advise the public that all primary and secondary school rugby programmes administered by and through the Ministry will now be officially registered under the newly established Samoa Rugby Football Union (SRFU).”

The move comes amidst heightened tensions between the SRFU and the current mother body, Lakapi Samoa.

The Ministry’s School Rugby programmes have until now, been affiliated to the mother body, Lakapi Samoa who run development programs such as Get into Rugby PLUS (GiR+).

GiR+ focuses on boys and girls aged 12 to 16, using non-contact tag rugby to blend sports training with a life-skills curriculum targeting gender equality and safe relationships.

The Ministry in its announcement says it hopes to work closely with the Samoa Rugby Football Union and all stakeholders “to ensure the successful implementation of this transition for the benefit of students, schools, and the future of rugby in Samoa.”

Samoa’s School Rugby has seen exciting parity across both the XVs format and the National Sevens tournament in recent years, with key regional schools securing major championships.
