Today 20th May, is World Bee Day, celebrated around the world with this year’s theme that focuses on raising and spreading awareness of the importance of bees to our food systems, and means of addressing and minimizing threats for their survival.

The Minister of Agriculture & Fisheries, Hon. La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt has issued special remarks to mark the occasion.

“Close to 90% of the world’s wild flowering plants rely entirely on bees for pollination,” said Laaulialemalietoa.

“Honey bees not only pollinate crops we so depend on but also provide honey and other healthy products for healthy living styles and income for our beekeeping farmers..”

The Minister warns that there has been a decline in bee populations, putting their survival and our livelihoods from beekeeping activities at risk.

“Let us continue to work together and implement sustainable beekeeping initiatives to reduce this impact on our food and
nutrition security, livelihoods and our environment”.

The Minister wishes Samoa and the world a very productive and successful World Bee Day!
