A matai facing one charge of indecent assault on an 8 year old boy of his village has pleaded not guilty before the Supreme Court of Samoa during this morning’s criminal mentions.
Police arrested the matai and held him in custody after the parents of the 8 year old boy reported the alleged incident to Police.
He was granted bail last week on the condition that he not return to his village.
This morning, he denied the charges against him through his lawyer, Quentiin Sauaga of LSM Law. The Supreme Court has set a September hearing date for the case to be heard.
Cases of sexual assault and indecent acts towards children continue to flood the Supreme Court of Samoa during weekly criminal mentions. Last October, an 8 year old took the stand to describe sexual acts towards her by her step-father. In March this year, two fathers appeared on the same day, each for raping not one, but two of their daughters.
