Man Dies While Out Fishing on New Years Eve

Police say a 49-year-old man who had gone fishing with a friend on New Years eve died before their boat returned to the dock at Apia’s Savalalo wharf.

The incident was reported to Police shortly after the New Year’s fireworks display, Deputy Commissioner Papalii Monalisa Tiai-Keti said.

The cause of death is not yet known, however, Papalii says preliminary findings is that he fell ill while fishing.

The fishing boat rushed back to the wharf but police say the man was had already passed by the time they had docked at Savalalo.

The deceased man was a New Zealand citizen who had been living in Samoa since 2011. The deceased was the captain and owner of the boat.

A report from the Coroner will determine if a post mortem is needed.

Papalii says three deaths were reported to Police during the festive season of 22 December to 03 January 2024.

A 26 year old from Salelologa is suspected to have taken his own life before New Years Day.

The third death was that of a male from Nofoalii whose body was found floating in the ocean after Christmas. It is suspected he drowned while fishing.

Post mortems are expected for all three deaths.
