The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) in a press release confirmed that their field team were blessed to have encountered humpback whales migrating through Samoa’s warm oceans.
The release cited that from August to November, “these magnificent ocean travelers migrate through Samoa’s warm waters to breed, give birth and care for their young..”
“Samoa’s new Marine Protected Area network also helps protect important whale migration routes identified through the Marine Spatial Planning process.”
As we welcome them back the Ministry urged the public to please remember that whales are protected under Samoa’s Marine Wildlife Protection Regulations 2009.
“Do not chase, approach or attempt to interact with them, and always remain at least 100 metres away.”
