Joint Central Bank of Samoa – International Monetary Fund (IMF) – Asian Development Bank (ADB) Regional Seminar on Fintech and Financial Inclusion in the Pacific Island Countries


The Central Bank of Samoa will be co-hosting with the IMF and ADB a regional workshop under the theme “FinTech and Financial Inclusion” at the Return to Paradise Resort, Matautu, Lefaga on Tuesday, 13 November 2018.

It will be attended by regional central banks governors and banking commissioners and their respective officials from the Pacific Island Countries namely Fiji, Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Timor Leste, Vanuatu, Australia, New Zealand and Samoa. It will also be attended by local money transfer operators and commercial bank representatives.

The Seminar will look at the various opportunities and challenges presented by financial technology (FinTech) in the delivery of financial services. Particular focus will be on:


  • FinTech solutions for financial inclusion;
  • Cutting-Edge FinTech for cross-border remittance transfers;
  • Crypto Assets and their regulation;
  • Prospects of Central Bank Digital Currencies


The Seminar will feature international guest speakers who are experts in these topics to provide presentations and to share their knowledge and experiences. This Seminar will also look at providing participants with practical solutions to the issues and challenges especially for small island developing states (SIDS) in the Pacific region.

The outcome of this regional seminar should assist pacific island countries to provide a unique fintech solution and a regional checklist for common problems the region is facing, with participants gaining insight into improving their capabilities to address these issues.
