The Manu Samoa 7s will meet Argentina at the Cup Quarterfinals in Dubai after securing a place in the Top 8 of the new format HSBC SVNS series where there are only 3 pools of 4 teams.
Samoa secured a place in the Cup quarters via two bonus points earned for close “within 7” pool game losses to South Africa (22-14) and New Zealand (14-12).
Samoa were unlucky to be edged out by the All Blacks in the last seconds of the game.
The Manu led 12-7 when the hooter sounded but a lineout throw-in was stolen by New Zealand and Brady Rush broke through the Samoa defense to place it under the post and steal the win 14-12.
Samoa ended Day 1 with a solid 24-0 win over Canada scoring four tries with BJ Telefoni Lima and Malakesi Masefau with two tries each.
The Manu will go into Day 2 without Team Captain Vaovasa Afa-Sua and playmaker Faafoi Falaniko, who have both been ruled out for the rest of this weekend’s tournament.
In other Day 1 results Canada took a 21-12 lead over NZ, but were hampered by injuries to three players, eventually going down 26-21. In the pool decider South Africa defeated New Zealand 21-19.
Australia also scraped through under the new HSBC world series format after registering losses to Ireland 19-12 and Argentina by 31-14. Again the bonus point loss to Ireland earned the Aussies a place in the Top 8.
In other interesting results of Day 1 – France defeated Great Britain 35-0 before Fiji takes out France 40-5. Then Great Britain come back and beat Fiji 24-0 possibly the first time in Sevens history the Flying Fijians were left tryless in their entire lives.
USA topped their pool with Fiji, France and GB and are rewarded with a QF against New Zealand.
Samoa is nine hours ahead of Dubai. Samoa’s Quarterfinal is scheduled for 12pm in Dubai – 9pm Sunday night in Samoa (and NZ).
