Samoa topped the four-team U19 Women’s East Asia-Pacific Qualifier to book their tickets to the mega event next year, to be co-hosted by Thailand and Malaysia.

Heading into the sixth and final matchday in Indonesia on top of the group, Captain Avetia Fetu Mapu’s side had destiny in their own hands.

They ensured Samoa’s progression with a four-wicket win over the Fijians with 34 balls to spare.

In the first game agianst Indonesia, Samoa chased down 72 with two wickets and two overs to spare, before an eight-run win four days later.

In their second game, they bowled their opponents out for just 73, successfully defending 81 as Silepea Polataivao claimed 6/15 (4).

Samoa suffered a minor setback when they were defeated by PNG in their second outing against them, but Papua New Guinea had also dropped points against Indonesia, which meant that a win on the final day would take the Samoans through.

A hat-trick from Fiji’s Mele Waqanisau rocked Samoa’s chase on the final day in pursuit of 88, but the work of senior Samoan international Angel Sootaga provided a strong enough platform for Samoa to compete as they chased down the target with over five overs to spare.

Samoa had come into the four-team competition as underdogs, with last year’s Women’s U19 T20 World Cup entrants Indonesia – and a Papua New Guinea side boasting multiple senior internationals.

Despite the pre-tournament talk, the Samoans stamped their authority on the afternoon of the very first matchday by confidently chasing down a target of 124 against Papua New Guinea, with Mapu’s 31* (23) backing up the efforts of No.3 Verra Farane’s 44 (31).

Verra Farane Livi was awarded Best Batter of the Tournament. Livi registered Samoa’s first half century of the tournament in the first match against Fiji – with an extraordinary performance batting 79 runs from 43 balls.
