2 Timothy 4:3-4 “FOR THE TIME WILL COME WHEN PEOPLE WILL NOT PUT UP WITH SOUND DOCTRINE. INSTEAD, TO SUIT THEIR OWN DESIRES, THEY WILL GATHER AROUND THEM A GREAT NUMBER OF TEACHERS TO SAY WHAT THEIR ITCHING EARS WANT TO HEAR. THEY WILL TURN THEIR EARS AWAY FROM THE TRUTH AND TURN ASIDE TO MYTHS.”
God’s Word is your only protection against deception. It is the only protection against being led astray by false teachers and preachers.
Sadly, many people will also find teachers and preachers who will say things that “SUIT THEIR OWN DESIRES.” Their pursuit of truth will be tainted by their own desires, lusts, and passions.
And depending on what one wants and desires – you can find teachers and preachers who will suit any personal preferences that one might have.
Notice that today’s passage says that people “WILL GATHER AROUND THEM A GREAT NUMBER OF TEACHERS TO SAY WHAT THEIR ITCHING EARS WANT TO HEAR.”
Many false doctrines and erroneous teachings have A GREAT NUMBER OF TEACHERS and preachers. But even if hundreds of thousands teach something that isn’t accurately interpreted – it doesn’t make it true.
For those who genuinely love the Lord, His Word is the final authority in all matters pertaining to life. If you hunger and thirst for God’s Word, your ears won’t itch for self-centered preaching but long for Christ-centered teaching. You won’t TURN AWAY FROM THE TRUTH but draw closer to God and His Written Word.
As you commit to growing in your understanding of God’s Word in 2023, remember 1Timothy 4:16, “WATCH YOUR LIFE AND DOCTRINE CLOSELY. PERSEVERE IN THEM, BECAUSE IF YOU DO, YOU WILL SAVE BOTH YOURSELF AND YOUR HEARERS.”
